My Testimony . . . . . What I am about to share with you is completely true. It concerns a time prior to my Mother's death.
After I married, my sister knew that my Mother was not comfortable living alone and so offered her the opportunity to move to Georgia. My sister's neighbor had created an apa

rtment at ground level below his home. So my sister and her husband moved my mother to Georgia. I knew she'd be happy there. After a month or so my Mother had begun to show forgetfulness and eventually it was necessary for my sister to hire a Nurse to stay with my mother while my sister and her husband worked. My Mother only continued to get worse. My sister took her to her Doctor and after examining her said that she had begun to show signs of Alzheimers Disease. The Doctor suggested that my Mother be placed in an institution which cared for such patients. My Mother was not overjoyed by the idea but it was necessary. She had a private room with a bathroom, a TV and small refrigerator. My sister visited her daily. My mother came to know the Nurses and a few other patients who as well had minor cases of Alzheimers. As for myself, I don't what caused my problem, but the second and third fingers on my right hand had swelling on the second knuckle. In time the swelling got worse and I was in constant pain. It was especially difficult at work and whenever I bumped my hand against something I was moving, the pain was severe. I went to my Doctor and he said it was a severe form of arthritis. He told me to come back in three weeks and if it did not get better that he would prescribe medication.
My sister had forwarded a message to me, my brother Jack and my sister Caroline. . . . . that our Mother made one request of us . . . that we each call her once each week . . . that she's able to speak to us and stay in touch. She also made a request of each of us . . . that we pray that she has a peaceful death. One evening after speaking to me, my Mother asked that I pray for her, that she have a peaceful death. After the call, I got down on my knees and spoke to God. I said to Him . . . Lord, I want to cut a deal with you . . . I ask that you allow my Mother a peaceful death and if so, I will not seek medication for the pain in my fingers, that even if this pain cripples me, I will never seek help.
A little over two months passed and I received a call from my sister telling me that our Mother had died. Our Mother had called for a Nurse in the middle of the night to help her get to the bathroom. Once the Nurse got her back into bed, the Nurse said to her that she would see her in the morning for breakfast. She also said that our Mother was smiling and in very good spirits. She died during the night. I knew then that I would never see my Doctor again. It was on Tuesday that I received the call and her funeral Mass was to be held on Saturday. My wife and I left on a Thursday
